Peel Energy worked with the former North West Regional Development Agency to explore the potential of generating electricity from tidal power in the Mersey Estuary. The study completed in 2011, identified the preferred scheme as a 700MW tidal barrage that could generate enough electricity to meet the needs of more than 200,000 homes. This is one of 16 Ocean Gateway projects which make up Peel’s contribution to Atlantic Gateway.
